History

SLN Charities came into existence in 1906, thanks to the passionate dedication and generosity of its founder, Yajman Janopakari Sri Doddanna Setty, a prominent merchant and philanthropist of his time. The Trust was established in accordance with the will of Sri Doddanna Setty, who envisioned a legacy of service to humanity through education and employment, especially through cottage industries. The journey began in 1905 with the creation of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Dharma Patashale, a school that was officially inaugurated on March 10, 1906, by the Maharaja of Mysore.

Sri Doddanna Setty’s selfless contributions earned him immense respect, and he was affectionately called 'Janopakari,' meaning 'one who benefits the people.' In recognition of his efforts, His Highness Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the Maharaja of Mysore, honored him with this title

on October 18, 1907, in Amba Vilas Palace, presenting him with the royal Mysore Peta and the Gandaberunda insignia.

Driven by his unwavering desire to serve the community, Doddanna Setty approached Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV with a request for land to establish an institution dedicated to public welfare through education and culture. In response, the Maharaja graciously allotted 5.5 acres of land near the Tippu Sultan Fort in Bangalore. Doddanna Setty constructed a hall that came to be known as 'Doddanna Hall,' which became a hub of cultural activities and provided lodging and boarding for students pursuing their education in Bangalore.

SLN Charities, originally named Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Charities, was founded in 1906, and the SLN School was established that same year. What began in humble surroundings grew into a PU College and Degree College, eventually becoming a heritage building recognized by the Government of Karnataka. During the school's inauguration, the Maharaja expressed his admiration for Doddanna Setty’s efforts, stating that the school was a source of lasting interest for the founder, wishing that he would continue to oversee its progress for many years

Though Doddanna Setty entrusted the management of the school to Annie Besant and the Theosophical Society in 1917, he resumed responsibility for the school in 1918. Additionally, Doddanna Setty’s contributions to the cultural scene in Bangalore included the establishment of a theater, which later became Paramount Talkies in 1905. This theater hosted the screening of Sati Sulochana in 1934, marking the debut of the first Kannada talkie. Through his visionary work, Janopakari Sri Doddanna Setty’s legacy continues to shape the educational and cultural landscape of Bangalore.
